Position Overview

Amyris Bio Products Portugal, Unipessoal, Lda, a fully owned subsidiary of Amyris Inc., in collaboration with UCP Porto (Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Porto) is opening an international selection tender for one vacancy of an experienced and innovative Senior Scientist, with global knowledge of the cosmetics industry and demonstrated history of working in business development, for Research and Innovation and play a critical role in Research & Innovation projects to develop, evaluate, scale-up and commercialize ?No Compromise? Clean Beauty ingredients that will address future consumer needs and transform the beauty industry in more sustainable and disruptive ways. This position is part of the Alchemy project (PT2020/POCI n.º 27578) developed in the CBQF - Centre of Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry located at the Faculty of Biotechnology (ESB) of the Catholic University of Portugal, at Porto.
We are looking for someone who is a team-player with a can-do attitude that thrives in a fast-paced environment and is able under limited supervision to handle multiple projects and bring deep cosmetic industry expertise to support applications scientists in early identification, evaluation and development of new Clean Beauty ingredients for a wide variety of cosmetic product applications. This includes, among others, formulation development of skin care products of all different forms, performance evaluation, raw material specification and qualification, sales sample preparation, ensuring quality and stability of each product from lab to production and technology transfer.
As a SSRI you will bring a strong attitude for working in multi-expertise, multi-cultural teams with agility. This is a highly application oriented technical position that will require you to maintain awareness of scientific literature, patents, raw material technology, processing methodology, be at pace with new developments in cosmetic science and related fields, and bring a deep working knowledge of consumer need gaps, marketing trends, regulatory developments as well as cosmetic ingredients competitive landscape in order to help identify and assess emerging Clean Beauty cosmetic innovation opportunities and perform innovative product development assignments in an efficient manner.
The SSRI will assume responsibility for managing the pipeline and leading the creative and technical journey to fully develop & launch disruptive ?No Compromise? ? superior performance, cost competitive, sustainable ? Clean Beauty ingredients and technologies that entail a compelling business case and can be applied into new or existing products with proven consumer perceived benefits.

Job Responsibilities

  • Translate consumer needs into technical problem statements that support ideation phase of new R&D and prototype ingredients with actionable recommendations drawn on deep consumer, market and industry insights, that tap into emerging Clean Beauty innovation opportunities;
  • Support the development of the right ingredient specifications in view of their application in different skincare formulations correlating the relationship between ingredients and product performance;
  • Issue compounding SOP, product specifications, filling SOP making sure everything is clearly communicated;
  • Have development responsibility for all aspects of formulation across a range of technologies (surfactant solutions, emulsions, wax blends, etc.);
  • Support consumer studies, testing and claims substantiation for new opportunities;
  • Maintain working knowledge of raw material innovations and emerging research in the cosmetic science field by proactively researching new concepts, materials, processes, and technical opportunities;
  • Show creativity and resourcefulness to come up with solutions to issues, which may arise during product development and/or in anticipation to issues which may appear in pilot plant or manufacturing;
  • Contribute to multiple projects at any given time with extensive collaboration with internal and external innovation partners on a global level;
  • Navigates through safety, toxicology, regulatory ? and other protocols ? as well as sensory, formulation and other expert teams to seamlessly integrate the output of these disciplines into prototype learnings and prioritize development work;
  • Support scale up and initial successful commercial manufacture by ensuring scalable quality and performance of all products from conception to market launch and beyond;
  • Work with R&D Scientists to support them in creating succinct reports that translate and communicate complex technical concepts to business areas and laypersons highlighting key insights that can be translated into compelling actionable recommendations that can be easily assessed and discussed with cross functional teams.

Requirements

  • Minimum qualification MSc in Cosmetics or other relevant areas (Chemistry, Material Sciences, Bio-Physics, Bio-Materials, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacology, Bio-Chemistry or comparable Sciences) w/ Cosmetic application focus;
  • Demonstrated track record (preferably +5 years) in industrial R&D/Product Development driving ingredients and/or products to commercialization;
  • Working knowledge of typical stage gate processes for the development of ingredients and consumer products;
  • Fundamental understanding of the technical, marketing, and commercial requirements of ingredients and products, preferably in personal care and cosmetic;
  • Experienced in working with external partners in industry and academia;
  • Highly literate in materials science of cosmetics and seasoned in their application;
  • Methodological mindset to test new ideas and work towards valid results;
  • Excellent attention to detail and be experienced at completing and submitting PIF, CPSR, Claims, Challenge tests, raw material data, Reach and other global technical information to ensure all documentation is up to date and filed with the regulatory authorities;
  • Experience of all normal laboratory equipment in different process phases (separations, purification, analytical, bioactivity) e.g.: HPLC, GC, FTIR, viscometer, pH meter and Moisture Analyser (among others);
  • Consumer centric approach to applied science: able to translate consumer insights into actionable R&I recommendations to drive exceptional consumer satisfaction a must;
  • Adaptable leadership style that displays high tolerance to business ambiguity, used to thrive under quickly changing situations with ability to meet short turnaround times;
  • Self-motivated and able to operate independently, as well as work effectively with others;
  • Possess flexible communication style to collaborate with multiple stakeholders from varying backgrounds; Able to effectively translate and present results and insights to business users at different seniority levels;
  • Proficient in Word, PowerPoint, data entry and statistical software programs.

If the Master Degree has been awarded by a non-Portuguese higher education institution it must comply with the provisions of the Portuguese legislation on the recognition of foreign degrees, regulated by Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of August 16th. The signature of the contract is conditional on the presentation of the formal document.
