ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN NEUROMORPHIC COMPUTING Full-time

de University of Twente em Lisboa (Publicado em 20-02-2020)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Within the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science (EEMCS), the group NanoElectronics (NE), part of the Centre for Brain-Inspired Nano Systems (BRAINS), is looking for a highly motivated Assistant Professor (f/m) in Neuromorphic Computing.

In this position, you will work on novel brain-inspired nanomaterial systems for Neuromorphic Computing that can eventually compete with artificial neural networks implemented in conventional CMOS-based computers with von Neumann architecture. Recent work in the group NE has shown that reconfigurable logic realized in networks of dopants in silicon can have smaller footprint and energy consumption than equivalent CMOS-based logic . The Nanolab of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology is at your disposal for experimentation, as well as state-of-the-art physical and electrical characterization techniques.

The NanoElectronics Group and the Centre for Brain-Inspired Nano Systems are embedded in the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology (www.mesaplus.utwente.nl). MESA+ is one of the largest nanotechnology research institutes in the world, delivering competitive and successful high-quality research. It uses a unique structure, which unites scientific disciplines, and builds fruitful international cooperation to excel in science and education. The institute employs 500 people of which 275 are PhD?s or PostDocs. With its brand new NanoLab facilities the institute holds 1250 m2 of cleanroom space and state-of-the-art research equipment. MESA+ has an internationally appealing and multidisciplinary approach by combining physics, electrical engineering, chemistry, materials science and mathematics.

  • You develop a distinctive research domain, and lead and further build the neuromorphic team in the group NE;

  • You spend your time 50/50 on teaching and research. A reduced teaching load in the beginning years is the norm;

  • You give lectures in English, in several educational programs in Electrical Engineering and/or Computer Science. Mastering the Dutch language is not a prerequisite, but naturally a long term goal;

  • We strongly encourage a high degree of responsibility and independence, while collaborating with close colleagues, researchers and other university staff.

YOUR PROFILE

You have the following:

  • A PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, materials science or computer science and have at least two years postdoc experience;

  • An existing track record in neuromorphic computing shown by publications in high rank journals or strong evidence of high research potential;

  • Affinity with both theoretical as experimental work and experience with teaching and advising students;

  • Excellent communication skills, like to connect with people and can form a bridge between people with different backgrounds;

  • Proficiency in English.

INFORMATION AND APPLICATION

Are you the bridge builder that we are looking for?

Please send your application March 31st at the latest via the 'Apply now' button, and include a motivation letter and your curriculum vitae with publication list, references and a research and teaching statement.

You are welcome to contact mrs. J.L.G. Kuipers ? Beld for any questions you might have ([email protected]).

OUR OFFER

We offer an excellent and stimulating scientific environment with an attractive campus and lots of facilities for sports and leisure. The university provides a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues in which internationalization is an important part of the strategic agenda.

  • You will be appointed fulltime for 2 years with the prospect of a permanent position after a positive evaluation. If preferred, a part-time contract may be negotiated.

  • The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for universities, and include:

  • A starting salary from ? 3.637 (scale 11) to ? 5.656 (scale 12) gross per month, based on relevant work experience;

  • A holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%;

  • A minimum of 29 leave days in case of fulltime employment, based on 38 hours a week; A workweek of 40 hours would result in 12 extra leave days.
  • Professional and personal development programs;

  • A solid pension scheme.

THE ORGANIZATION

The University of Twente.
We stand for life sciences and technology. High tech and human touch. Education and research that matter. New technology which leads change, innovation and progress in society. The University of Twente is the only campus university of the Netherlands; divided over five faculties we provide more than fifty educational programmes. We have a strong focus on personal development and talented researchers are given scope for carrying out groundbreaking research.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status or disability status. Because of our diversity values we do particularly support women to apply.

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) comprises three disciplines that shape Information and Communication Technology. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. The faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. The research which enjoys a high profile both at home and internationally, has been accommodated in the multidisciplinary research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centra and Digital Society Institute.
