LisboaÁrea Científica: Philosophy / Reasoning and Argumentation

Requisitos de admissão: Master?s (or equivalent) degree in Philosophy / Linguistics / Communication. To be considered, a candidate:

1) must have documented training in and understanding of the philosophy of language and argumentation;

2) must have specific background and interest in pragmatics (speech act theory, Gricean approaches);

3) must demonstrate fluency in English (IELTS, Cambridge Proficiency, TOEFL);

4) must commit to completing a doctoral dissertation in the field described below.

Plano de trabalhos: The successful candidate will work as part of the strategic project of the Nova Institute of Philosophy (UID/FIL/UI0183/2019) in collaboration with the COST Action CA17132 ?European Network for Argumentation and Public Policy Analysis? (PI: Marcin Lewinski, 2018-2022) funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission and managed in Lisbon at the Reasoning and Argumentation Lab of the Nova Institute of Philosophy. The project focuses broadly on the rationality of public discourse, especially as applied to environmental issues. The successful candidate will be integrated within the project?s Working Group 2: Norms of Public Argument: Concepts and Methods, which specifically engages with the kinds of normativity that characterize public arguments. The group?s task is to develop a catalogue of concepts of public argument, of the kinds of normativity pertinent to the evaluation of public arguments, and of the methods for studying them. Three subgroups investigate specific forms of normativity of public argument: a) epistemic; b) linguistic; c) political and legal. The successful candidate will be integrated in the linguistic subgroup b).

The PhD project can be developed around a number of issues, such as disagreements and misunderstandings, as manifested in argumentative discussions, illocutionary pluralism in polylogues, implicit meaning in argumentation, and others. The project will be developed within the ArgLab-IFILNOVA, while the required coursework can be officially attached to either the Department of Philosophy or the Department of Communication.

Non-Portuguese citizens must reside within Portugal and work exclusively within the project during the grant duration.

The successful candidate will be eligible for funding within the COST Action, including international training schools, research visits (up to 6 months) at the foreign institutions recognized within the Action, as well as conference and travel grants. Special provisions in the COST scheme are made for Early Career Investigators (such as PhD students), working in the Inclusiveness Target Countries (such as Portugal), and also for women.

Following the rules of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the successful candidate will be receiving a monthly tax-free fellowship of ? 989,70.

First grant period is 12 months, extendable up to 48 months depending on the successful evaluation of the academic progress.

Local de trabalho: O trabalho será desenvolvido no(a) IFILNOVA da FCSH/NOVA, sob a orientação científica do Professor Dr Marcin Lewinski.

Duração da(s) bolsa(s): A bolsa terá a duração de 12 meses, com início previsto em setembro de 2019. O contrato de bolsa poderá ser renovado até 48 meses.

Condições financeiras da bolsa (remuneração): O montante da bolsa corresponde a ? 989,70, pago mensalmente e por transferência bancária, conforme tabela de valores das bolsas atribuídas diretamente pela FCT, I.P. no País (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).

Métodos de seleção: Os métodos de seleção a utilizar serão os seguintes:

  • Suitability and potential of CV, including academic grades and language skills: 50%;
  • Statement of interest: 30%;
  • (Online) interview: 20% (only with shortlisted candidates).
