Within the faculty of Science and Technology (S&T), the cluster Energy, Materials and Systems (EMS) is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Assistant/Associate Professor (f/m) in ?Superconducting Materials and Applications?.

Energy, Materials and Systems (EMS)

We seek to develop materials and conductors, key technologies, and superconducting systems for the transition to a more sustainable society. An important new field herein is superconductivity for energy applications, energy-efficient generation of high magnetic field for fundamental research, in the medical sector for diagnostics and treatment, and for a sustainable circular economy with cryogenic cooling always as the key enabling technology.

The application-oriented research greatly benefits from EMS? unique infrastructure and its excellence in the field recognized worldwide. This is illustrated by its track record in international pioneering projects on energy technology related projects like thermal nuclear fusion (ITER, DEMO and beyond), as well as energy efficient use in projects for particle accelerators and space applications (CERN and ESA).

EMS? frontier research concerns the unique combination of applied superconductivity and enabling cryogenics. The former area focusses on power-dense applications, often in sustainable energy. An excellent example is superconducting generators for wind turbines.

Energy density is also key in particle accelerators for high-energy physics and medical applications. EMS has strong links to CERN and other High Energy Physics Laboratories, through the special chairs that are part of the cluster EMS; Industrial Applications of Superconductivity (ITS) and High-Energy Physics (HEF).

EMS also develops innovative cooling technologies, specifically sorption-based coolers and MEMS-based micro-coolers. Vibration-free coolers are under development for cooling optical detectors in space missions, but also in terrestrial instruments as the proposed Einstein Telescope. Furthermore, the fundamentals and applications of thermal sciences in space- and time domain are explored with focus on heat transfer phenomena at cryogenic temperatures.

EMS is involved in the BSc programs Applied Physics and Advanced Technology and in the MSc programs Applied Physics, Nanotechnology and Sustainable Energy Technologies.

University of Twente

We stand for life sciences and technology. High tech and human touch. Education and research that matter. New technology, which leads change, innovation and progress in society. The University of Twente is the only campus university of the Netherlands; divided over five faculties we provide more than fifty educational programs. We have a strong focus on personal development, and talented researchers are given scope for carrying out groundbreaking research.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our organization. We do not discriminate because of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status. Because of our diversity values, we do particularly support women to apply.

EMS seeks to expand with an additional scientific staff member dedicated to multi-physics modeling and experimental validation, in particular but not exclusively, in the area of high-temperature superconducting materials and systems. This field is becoming increasingly relevant for extreme high-field magnets, renewable energy applications, in medical diagnostics and therapy, in mobility and in waste recycling through magnetic separation. Since various physics domains meet, like electromagnetics as well as thermal and mechanical aspects, multi-physics modelling is crucial in the design of applications using high temperature superconductors. On the materials side, scientific issues lie in the intrinsic anisotropy of high temperature superconductors, in the limits regarding their current-carrying capacity, in induced losses and in the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. On the systems side, these translate into technical challenges such as the operational stability of high temperature superconducting magnets, their response to extreme mechanical loads resulting from the combination of high currents and magnetic field, and the realization of competitive and robust application designs. A close synergy with the EMS research on cryogenic thermal transport will greatly strengthen EMS? position in this fast-developing research field.

The staff member will take his part in the courses of EMS in the UT BSc and MSc programs. Lectures and supervision of students will be in English. Mastering the Dutch language is not a pre-requisite, but naturally a long-term goal.

Furthermore, we expect the new staff member to take a high degree of responsibility and independence, while friendly collaborating with colleagues within the EMS cluster and other university staff.

We offer an excellent and stimulating scientific environment with an attractive campus and many facilities for sport and leisure. The university provides a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues, in which internationalization is an important part of the strategic agenda. We offer a high degree of responsibility and independence, while working in our team and collaborating with close colleagues, researchers and other university staff.

  • You will be appointed fulltime for 2 years with the prospect of a permanent position after a positive evaluation;

  • The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Universities (CAO), and include:

    • A starting salary from ? 3.637 (scale 11) to ? 6.738 (scale 14) gross per month, based on relevant work experience;
    • A holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%;
    • A minimum of 29 leave days in the case of full-time employment;
    • Professional and personal development programs;
    • A solid pension scheme.
